The verb “To Be” in Spanish | Ser vs Estar
Mientras que en inglés se usa el verbo “to be” (un solo verbo, varios usos), en español tenemos dos verbos para expresar “I’m bored” (estoy aburrido) y “I’m boring” (soy aburrido). No es lo mismo decirle a tu crush “Hoy estás muy guapo” que decirle “¡Eres muy guapo!”. While in English we use the verb “to be” (one verb, several uses), in Spanish we have two verbs to express “I’m bored” and “I’m boring”. It is not the same to say to your crush “Hoy estás muy guapo” (you are very handsome today) than to say “Eres muy guapo!
Sin embargo, no es la única característica de estos verbos. SER y ESTAR tienen otro “superpoder”. Son capaces de cambiar el significado del adjetivo al que acompañan. However, this is not the only characteristic of these verbs. SER and ESTAR have another “superpower”. They are able to change the meaning of the adjective they accompany.
- Ella es lista (smart), pero no está lista (ready) para competir.
- Eres malo (bad), incluso cuando estás malo (sick).
- Ella es rica (rich) y famosa gracias a sus recetas, pero no está rica (delicious) su comida.
Ser vs Estar
Seguro que cuando has estudiado el verbo TO BE en español, te han dicho que uses el verbo ser para situaciones permanentes y el verbo estar para situaciones temporales; pero esa explicación suele confundir a los estudiantes. Especialmente, cuando cambiamos de tiempo verbal o nos encontramos con excepciones tales como ESTAR MUERTO, algo que es permanente.
Surely, when you have studied the verb TO BE in Spanish, you have been told to use the verb ser for permanent situations and the verb estar for temporary situations; but this explanation often confuses students, especially when we change verb tenses or encounter exceptions such as ESTAR MUERTO, something that is permanent.
En español el verbo “to be” se traduce como “ser o estar”, dependiendo del contexto y de lo que queramos expresar. In Spanish the verb “to be” is translated as “ser or estar”, depending on the context and what we want to express.
Ser
Solemos usar el verbo SER para hablar de aquellas características que definen a una persona, animal o cosa. We usually use the verb SER to talk about those characteristics that define a person, animal or thing. For instance: Soy delgada. Soy española. Soy profesora de español.
Estar
Solemos usar el verbo ESTAR para referirnos a la situación o estado en el que se encuentra una persona, animal o cosa. We usually use the verb ESTAR to refer to the situation o state in which a person, animal or thing is. For example: Estoy triste hoy. Estoy en casa ahora. Estoy de vacaciones este fin de semana.
Ser vs Estar
Did you know… The verb ser and the verb estar change the meaning of the adjective they accompany.

- Ser malo: de mal comportamiento o de mala calidad. Estar malo: Estar enfermo. Ser malo: to be badly behaved or of bad quality. Estar malo: To be sick.
- Ser aburrido: soso, que no sabe divertirse. Estar aburrido: No tener nada para divertirse. Ser aburrido: to be dull, who does not know how to have fun. Estar aburrido: To have nothing to have fun with.
- Ser bueno: Buen comportamiento o buena calidad. Estar bueno: Sabroso o recuperado de una enfermedad. Ser bueno: Good behavior or good quality. Estar bueno: Tasty or recovered from an illness.
- Ser listo: Astuto, inteligente. Estar listo: Preparado. Ser listo: Clever, intelligent. Estar listo: To be ready
- Ser moreno: Tener el pelo oscuro. Estar moreno: Bronceado. Ser moreno: To have dark hair. Estar moreno: To be tanned.
- Ser rico: Tener dinero. Estar rico: Sabroso. Ser rico: To have money. Estar rico: Tasty.
